Location: Leesburg, VA or Allendale, NJ preferred

This position will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of a comprehensive product environmental compliance program. This is a strategic and highly technical role responsible for establishing and maintaining compliance with evolving global regulations related to environmental health and safety, hazardous substances, human and animal-derived materials, and sustainability requirements. The ideal candidate will bring both regulatory acumen and engineering expertise, with a strong understanding of medical devices, particularly implants and reusable instruments. Candidates should ideally be located in or around Leesburg, VA or Allendale, NJ

What You'll Do

  • Establish and own the product environmental compliance program across all devices, instruments, and packaging materials
  • Interpret and apply regulatory requirements including (but not limited to):


EU RoHS & REA

CHSCIP reporting

California Prop 65

MDR Annex I (related to hazardous substances)

PFAS regulations

Conflict minerals

Human tissue and animal derivative requirements (e.g., ISO 22442, TSE/BSE risk, EUMDR/IVDR guidance)

  • Identify and assess the use of restricted or hazardous substances in existing and new products
  • Develop strategies to mitigate compliance risks related to restricted substances or component
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on material declarations, supplier data requests, and product stewardship
  • Collaborate with R&D and packaging engineers to select compliant materials during product development
  • Create or update product BOMs with substance-level data where applicable
  • Build and maintain systems or tools for ongoing tracking, documentation, and reporting of compliance status
  • Lead internal training and awareness initiatives to ensure understanding of environmental compliance obligation
  • Partner with supplier quality and procurement teams to gather and verify material compliance data
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports or declarations
  • Stay up to date with evolving regulations globally and assess their impact on product portfolios

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, Chemical, Materials, Environmental, or related field) or equivalent experience. Master's degree preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in product environmental compliance, preferably within medical devices or a highly regulated manufacturing environment
  • Strong understanding of applicable environmental and biological material regulations
  • Experience with BOM-level substance declarations, supplier data gathering, and material compliance tools (e.g., BOMcheck, Assent, Foresite, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with biological material use regulations (e.g., ISO 22442) and relevant risk assessments a plus
  • Proven ability to build or mature a compliance function or program independently
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with design, quality, regulatory, and supplier teams

Compensation

Pay for this role is competitive and based on experience, with additional factors like territory requirements, qualifications, and performance taken into account. The typical pay range for this position is $124,000.00 - $135,000.00 annually, with potential for bonuses and incentives plus benefits. Final compensation is determined on a case-by-case basis and considers a variety of factors including experience level, skillset, and market conditions.
