Universal Shield Insurance Group (and its member companies – Universal Fire & Casualty Insurance Company ( and Shield Indemnity Inc.) has an opening for an experienced Commercial Garage Insurance Underwriter in our Scottsdale, AZ office in a hybrid (3 days in Office) capacity.

Our Garage underwriting department is seeking an experienced Insurance Underwriter, who is an accomplished multi-tasker that strives to deliver world-class service to key stakeholders.

This position is an excellent opportunity to support a growing insurance company led by experienced insurance professionals with a long history of working together and a proven track record of success.

Key responsibilities:

  • Underwrite, rate, and quote commercial garage coverage.
  • Coordinate and communicate with various parties including agents, producers, and underwriting staff to support our underwriting efforts and take appropriate action within designated timeframes.
  • Ensure quality and timeliness of policies and correspondence and respond to customers inquiries.
  • Ensure electronic files are accurately maintained per company and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform exposure comparisons, research risks via company and public data resources, and review applications to ensure accuracy of application, quote, and policy details.
  • Review garage inspection reports and manage necessary inspection recommendations.
  • Review policy performance for renewal business requesting additional information as needed.
  • Review applications and ensure quality of policies and correspondence and respond to agent, wholesaler, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop personal industry skills and knowledge to meet the company’s culture and expectations of continuous learning and career enrichment.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of current commercial insurance market trends, conditions, competitive intelligence, and product and service innovations.
  • Ability to interact collaboratively and collegially with colleagues, agents, and customers in a professional manner.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum high school diploma/GED required.
  • Two years commercial Garage insurance underwriting experience working with small and mid-size accounts.
  • Significant knowledge of commercial Garage coverages, endorsements, and regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal decision-making and analytical skills required.
  • Exceptional organizational skills to prioritize multiple tasks with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Continuous underwriting skills development. Professional designations are available via company paid self-training through The Institutes and The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.
  • Travel throughout the United States to various conventions, conferences, and client offices. Travel expectations are 2 weeks per quarter maximum.


Salary Range: $80,000 - $95,000. This is an exempt position with salary negotiable based on experience.
